About Redwood Materials
Redwood Materials was founded in 2017 by JB Straubel, co-founder and former CTO of Tesla, on a simple but radical idea: the critical minerals powering the energy transition already exist. They just need to come back. Today Redwood is the largest lithium-ion battery recycler in North America — recovering, refining, and redeploying critical minerals from end-of-life batteries back into the supply chain. On the energy side, Redwood has deployed the largest second-life battery project in the world, delivering power to AI data centers in months rather than years using proprietary energy architecture engineered entirely in-house. The company is profitable, the market it operates in is projected to grow 20 to 50 times over the next decade, and Redwood is the only company with the supply chain, the technology, and the operational scale to lead it.
Position Summary:Â
The Senior Manager, Field Performance Engineering, Energy Storage is accountable for the health of the deployed battery energy storage system (BESS) fleet. The role establishes, manages, and grows a multifunctional department spanning service engineering, applications engineering, field quality engineering, and reliability engineering. The position owns fleet-level statistical reporting on product quality and reliability, directs technical investigations of field issues, and establishes the frameworks that connect field operations to product engineering, including fleet monitoring, escalation, operations and maintenance handoff, and service tooling. This is a fully on-site role at 100 Hooper in San Francisco, with semi-regular travel to field sites.Â
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesÂ
Manages and grows a multifunctional department of service, applications, field quality, and reliability engineers, including hiring and developing functional leadsÂ
Accountable for the quality and reliability performance of the deployed BESS fleetÂ
Establishes fleet-level statistical reporting on product quality and reliability, including failure rates, availability, and warranty trends, for engineering and executive leadershipÂ
Directs technical investigations of field failures across electrical, thermal, controls, software, and power conversion systems through root cause and corrective action closureÂ
Establishes escalation tiers, service-level agreements, and handoff criteria between operations and maintenance, service engineering, and product engineering, along with frameworks for fleet monitoring, service tooling, and service documentationÂ
Manages applications engineering support for customer system sizing, integration, and site-specific configurationÂ
Manages the feedback loop from field data to product engineering, defining reliability and serviceability requirements for current and next-generation systemsÂ
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Â
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering or a related field; Master's degree preferredÂ
10+ years of experience with complex electromechanical, power electronics, or grid-scale energy systems, including 3+ years of people managementÂ
Experience working safely on high-voltage AC and DC systems, including applicable electrical safety practicesÂ
Working knowledge of BESS architecture, including energy management, battery management, power conversion, protection, and thermal management systemsÂ
Working knowledge of reliability engineering methods, including failure rate modeling, failure mode and effects analysis, and corrective action trackingÂ
Experience establishing structured escalation models between field operations, service engineering, and product engineeringÂ
Ability to travel up to 25% of the time and to support off-hours escalations as requiredÂ
In accordance with California pay transparency laws, the salary range for this position is listed below. Actual compensation may vary based on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and skills.Â
